Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Jeanette Wormald represents a new breed of Australian singer-songwriters who can reflect what it means to be Australian without relying on worn stereotypes. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, she was raised in the small rural community of Mount Compass on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula.
Her music reflects all the elements of living on the land—the hot sun, the wide blue sky, the hard bush life, and Australia's often-unacknowledged Aboriginal heritage. These themes would become the foundation of her songwriting throughout her career.
From Journalism to Music
In her teens, Jeanette moved to Adelaide and later pursued a career in journalism, travelling widely and gaining experiences that would later inform her songwriting. However, music and rural life eventually prevailed when she married a farmer and moved to a farm in low rainfall country known as the Northern Mallee, several hundred kilometres from Adelaide.
The Mallee—a drought-resistant eucalyptus tree—could also serve as a symbol of the resilient characters of Australian men and women who farm much of the semi-arid farmlands of South Australia. This environment became the catalyst for many of Jeanette's best-known songs.
"Her songs are born of red earth, Mallee scrub, evening mist, driving dust and the kind of skies you see nowhere else in the world."— John Schumann, Redgum
